In 2007, WHen. began two initiatives designed to help develop the next generation of writers:

Writers Ensemble

The Writers Ensemble
is a new three-month process which brings together a writer and a director to embark on a fresh and invigorative process to create a new piece of work. That work is then showcased for an audience who have the chance to comment and offer feedback and then return one month later to see how their ideas have possibly influenced the development of the work.

The first Writers Ensemble culminated in two showcases of work at Theatre503 in January and March 2008. The writers and directors were: Richard Appleby, Carl Daniels, Deborah Haywood, Hannah Khalil, Joanna Pinto and Amanda Wright; James Hammond, Dale Heinen, Timothy Hughes, Rhiannon Jackson and Julia Stubbs.

WHen. is delighted to continue its association with Theatre503 for this project and the writers and directors for the next showcases in May and June are: George Belfield, Mark Quartley, Louisa Fitzgerald and Tanith Lindon.

Have the opportunity to experience new work in its rawest form, and input into the growth and development of several new works. Come and be part of Writers Ensemble.

Writers Toolbox

The Writers Toolbox is a free ten–week course designed for new writers of any age and aims to further their knowledge by introducing them to a variety of techniques, methods and existing writers.

Each 90-minute weekly session is designed to expose writers to new techniques and ideas surrounding the craft and the art of playwrighting and the course is also aimed to facilitate the creation of a new play. Following the ten-week period, the writers involved are encouraged to write their new play over the next two months and then submit it to the company for feedback and assessment.

The first Writers Toolbox took place over spring 2007 at
Oval House, London, who generously gave us space for the sessions each week. The seven writers we worked with were: Will Davis, Alexandra Denye, Denise Keane, Natasha Langridge, Jenny Naish, Bernadette O'Leary and Sian Owen.

We are currently planning for the next Writers Toolbox to happen in autumn 2008. Dates of the course and how to apply will be posted soon.

And a new initiative for 2008...

Readers Group

Weaver Hughes Ensemble has recently formed a Readers Group to offer a script reading service, where writers are given feedback on scripts at any stage of development. Feedback will include how the work might be developed further or placed. Please allow up to three months for a report from the company.

To submit a script to WHen. send it by post or email it to:
