'Frontline
is a young company dedicated to emerging talent'
Michael Billington, The Guardian
Frontline began as a collaboration
between Rebecca Manson Jones of Spikenard and Timothy Hughes
of Weaver Hughes Ensemble. Their common desire was to develop
and produce new writing, underlined by the wanting to explore
and create new creative partnerships, which led to the creation
of a new endeavour.
Spikenard is a director-designer
collaboration between Rebecca Manson Jones and Jens Demant
Cole using minimalist design and non-textual elements to bring
new energy to live presentation.
In November 2003, Frontline
presented a week of semi-staged readings at Soho Theatre.
This was the culmination of an exciting and far-reaching development
process centred on the voices of 8 new playwrights collaborating
with a team of directors and dramaturgs.
The plays presented were:
Achidi J's Final Hours by Amy Evans
Burning Down The House by Jenny Mitchell
Felt Effects by Joy Wilkinson
The Flats by Darren Murphy
Judith Bloom by Peter Elkins
The Last Pig by Ali Taylor
Looking for Mister by George Gotts
Timewatching by Simon Macullum
Committed to the discovery
and development of new voices for theatre, Frontline explored
theatrical form, language and presentation and forged artistic
collaborations between the next generation of theatre-makers.
Then in 2004, Frontline presented a season of three of the
plays as full productions over a period of four months from
April to July:
The Flats by Darren Murphy
Achidi J's Final Hours by Amy Evans
Judith Bloom by Peter Elkins
